Macally Protective Leather Case for iPhone 3G, 3G S (Black) Review

I bought the Macally mCase a year ago when I first got my iPhone 3G. I put on a front and back protective film from Best Skins Ever onto the phone and then shoved it into this leather hard case. I've taken it out only about four times in the past year to clean the phone, and I've been pretty happy.

First thing to note is the case makes the phone a lot more bulky. I don't mind this, and I'm guessing that anyone in the market for a leather case is either looking more for looks or durability than sleekness so this might not be an issue for others either.

I do like the way this case looks, and it protects the phone very well. All the corners are protected well unlike some other leather case options that I've seen. I've dropped my phone a few times inside buildings and even on the sidewalk. My phone (and case) survived without a scratch. The leather exterior on this case has held up very well.

It's a tight fit to get your phone into the case. This is good because the design covers a lot of your phone (protection), and your phone will never have a chance to come out unintentionally. This is bad because you'll end up with pinched fingers the first time, and you might scratch your phone getting it into the case. As I said, I have a skin all around the phone. I have scratch marks in the skin on the back of the phone, and I don't care... but if I had scratched my phone getting it into the case, I'd be pretty upset.

The leather and the fabric lining are of nice quality. My leather has always looked at felt like leather and it's not been rubbery at all. After a year, though, the adhesives in the case have begun to let go. After about 8 months, I noticed that the leather was stretching out or had lost adhesion from the back side of the case. It's like there's a bubble of loose leather on the large back area. It's more noticeable when it's humid. I also took the phone out of the case last night, and I noticed that the inner lining has lost adhesion to the case under the front button on the iPhone.

The case is less than $20, it lasted a year, it looks good, and it has protected my phone well. The skin on the phone needs replacing, and I want a new case at the same time. I do like the look, feel and protection of a leather case, so I spent time looking for a leather replacement. I'm now at the end of my search... and I'm buying another Macally mCase.
